So today (Feb 8th, 2025) was my first day using the Original Wig Popper - 1-piece / 12 in - Short Porch Senior Slow Pitch Softball Bat (27 oz).
I started the break-in process.
I must say I’m highly disappointed. After one day of batting practice, it looks like it is cracking and the paint is peeling off!
Let me explain the scenario:
I play in a Senior Softball League in Arizona. (a 55+ community)
I’m 62 years old, 162 pounds and 5’ 9”
I’m not a power hitter, in fact, I’m lucky if I can hit a ball 240ft on a good day with the wind to my back!
My Short Porch Wig Popper has never been rolled, altered, shaved, or doctored in any way (I literally took it out of the wrapper today at practice).
I’ve never hit anything other than a 52 core / 300 compression ball (maybe a few 44 core balls in the bin, but 95% of the balls are 52’s)
I’ve never used this bat in a commercial batting cage.
Even though it is February, the temperature in Tucson, AZ today at batting practice is 78F and I ALWAYS use a bat warmer so my bat is usually above 100F when I step up to the plate (even in the winter).
So cold weather should not be an issue.
After today’s batting practice, I notice the bat cracking/peeling. (not spider web cracks) – See attached photo.
I am deeply disappointed with the durability of this bat after less than 50 swings.
Aside from the bat’s construction, cracking, peeling…
I love the bat. It has solid contact with the ball, zero vibration, and a generous sweet spot (or at least best I can tell with ~40 swings).
I just wish this bat was able to hold up longer than 1 batting practice session
PS: I’ve never cracked or broken a bat in my entire life!
I've contacted Short Porch Company directly and no reply (yet).
Of course with No Warranty, I'm not expecting much. At Least they could acknowledge my situation.
I bought a 26 oz and this bat is true to weight with a good 1/2 oz endload. I have med. bat speed and break in for me was at 50 hits. The performance is top notch and i am very happy with it. As usual buying and shipping from Smash it was a breeze.
Have about 40-50 swings with 50-75% swings and ball is traveling very far.
