Most composite fastpitch bats require 150–200 hits to fully break in the barrel. Swing at 50–75% speed off a tee or soft toss, rotating the bat a quarter turn every 10–15 hits. Never use a composite bat below 60°F before it's broken in — cold weather significantly increases the risk of barrel cracking. Avoid machine balls, rubber balls, and dimpled balls during break-in.

Start with age and height as your guide: ages 7–8 should start with 26"–28"; ages 9–10 with 28"–30"; ages 11–12 with 30"–32"; ages 13–14 with 32"–33"; and players 15 and older typically swing a 33"–34" bat. Have your player hold the bat with one hand and extend it parallel to the ground — if she can hold the position without the arm dropping, the length is right.
